What is The Little Theatre?

Little Theatre of Hazard (LTH) has been producing quality stage productions for 70 years! We were

founded by Rayma West in 1954 as an outgrowth of her work with her sorority, producing skits and

plays. Rayma was dedicated and Little Theatre of Hazard thrived. She was a gifted actress, and the best

producer of shows until her health prevented her from doing so.

LTH not only produced plays, we also participated in various music productions with the community

choir, providing décor and support. Our liaison to these events moved and gradually, the connection was

lost. We love the Community Choir and are willing to help when needed.

LTH produced shows at HTC for years, with some shows at the Forum. We were a member of the

Hazard Performing Art Series, until it was disbanded and it's mission was assumed by the AAA.

In 2006, LTH began a summer program for kids, with an arts festival for the community, which came to

known as Summer in the Park. The festival and show takes place on the fourth Sat of June. Except for

covid, we have produced a show each year and have engaged over 300 children in the program.

In 2010, Little Theatre became the leader of an effort to establish an arts center, complete with theatre

space, that would become the home for LTH. While that effort was not in vain, and indeed, a committee

of citizens, representing interested parties, established the Appalachian Arts Alliance, Inc. However,

due to unforeseen circumstances, the 'theater' side of the building lost its roof and became a courtyard

instead. LTH very much would still like to have a home. LTH has also conducted a one-week camp with a show at our local Twin Rocks Bible Camp. That is

something we would like to continue. Also, working with a local home-school co-op to bring theater to

them as well. 2024 is our 70th year and we want to celebrate! We are planning a community event that will involve

those who have helped with SIP, our young actors, and hopefully, a new show!
